My first… Muma Gee

Interesting interview granted by Muma Gee, am sure you'd enjoy it just like I did.

Which secondary school did you first attend?
That should be Government Secondary School, Nyanya, Abuja. It was for a short period. During our time, the best three students in the Junior Secondary School exams were usually given automatic admission to Government Girls Science Secondary School, Kuje. I remember vividly that I was among the top three students. I used to be very brilliant unlike now. So I was ‘pushed’ to the science school in Kuje. But eventually, I had to finish up at Army Day Secondary School, Asokoro.

Would you remember the first time you performed on the stage?
It was on a Saturday. We used to have a get together every Saturday in my school, Government Girls Science Secondary School, Kuje. I used to be the only one that would come out to perform. Others would be doing other stuff but I would choose to come out and sing in front of everybody feeling like a star.

What was the first song you recorded professionally?
It was produced by Nelson Brown in 1997. It was titled Funky Women.

What of your first album?
It was Black Attraction. I released it in 1998.

What was your first car?
It was a Nissan Maxima. I don’t think I can remember how much it cost me.

Did you have a best friend when you were much younger?
I had two, a boy and girl. They were my first best friends. Their names are Chika Aningba and Chioma. I can’t remember Chioma’s surname.

Every girl remembers her first kiss, do you remember yours?
I don’t remember, I wouldn’t even want to remember.

Who was your first crush?

I wouldn’t call it a ‘crush.’ But then, I idolised Mariam Makeba, Tina Turner and Diana Ross.

What was the first award you got?

It was in 2001. It was the AMEN awards for the Best Fresh Face and the Best Female Vocalist.
