Fred Ajudua refused bail request again

A Lagos High Court in Ikeja on Tuesday refused the bail application filed by a fraud suspect, Fred Ajudua.

Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye rejected Ajudua’s bail for “lacking in merit.”

In rejecting the evidence presented by Ajudua’s counsel, Mr. Olalekan Ojo, that Ajudua is suffering from a life-threatening ailment, Ipaye said that though the court did not pretend to be an expert in medical matters, the health status of the defendant was, however, “not the only factor to consider in granting the bail.

“The gravity of the allegation and the nature of the punishment if found guilty are other factors to consider,” she said.

She made reference to Ajudua’s antecedents in separate criminal matters before another Lagos State High Court where the defendant not only jumped bail but also allegedly interfered with the court process.

“In the circumstances therefore, I hold that the application for bail lacks merit and is, hereby ,refused,”  Ipaye ruled.

Ajudua is facing trial for allegedly defrauding a former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi (retd.), of about $5.9m (about N1bn).
