Precious John, better known as Presh of the defunct KC Presh group, actually went underground after the group split two years ago. As Kcee, the other half of the group became a household name, little or in fact, nothing was heard of Presh.
But speaking to Saturday Beats earlier in the week, the singer said the hiatus was necessary.
He said, “I had to learn more about music, how to play instruments. I went to Malaysia; from there I went to Singapore, China and then to the UK before I came back to Nigeria. I had to do voice training and voice enhancements.”
Apparently, the days of hiatus are over as Presh said he is storming the industry with something powerful, which he titled Olegelege.
Signed under Okwudili Umenyiora’s Erik Manny Records, Presh said his long absence will not affect his success in the industry.
“I know things have happened and things are happening. But music is universal. What is yours is yours. My travelling out was to learn more about the art. I am back now and I intend to take my place. Time has nothing to do with it. Once you know what you are doing, you will get there,” he enthused.
Recalling the break-up (which he would rather call ‘going solo’) with his former partner, Kcee, Presh said it was a joint decision to part ways.
“We had an agreement. It wasn’t a woman that broke us up. It was just two grown men making a decision. It was on a Wednesday morning and he called and we had a meeting. We brought the concept that we should go solo since it was the only thing we hadn’t done. But I realised at that point, there were things I needed to do. I didn’t have time to do those things before. But when we went solo, I felt it was the perfect time to do them,”
Having tried out the ‘solo’ angle, Presh said he would rather advise up and coming artistes to pursue their careers as individuals and not as a group.
“When you are in a group, it prevents you from giving your best. You would want to be considerate in some of the things you want to do. You might not even give the best because your partner is not on the same page with you, you have to blend.
“But when you are alone, you explore, you do more things, and you go higher. You can think straight. If you make mistake, you accept, if you succeed, it is you; nobody is dragging you back. Group tends to forget that either party contributes to make the group better. I am not saying this was the case of KC Presh. Group is good but it is better to be a solo artiste,” he said.
But since Kcee’s career has blossomed as a solo artiste with his Limpopo and Pull Over, more than it did during the time of KC Presh, could it be that he was the one that dragged the group back, Saturday Beats asked Presh.
He said, “Whatever we are doing is still centred on each other. When you leave a company, you don’t go to another company to collect a lower salary, you move higher. I believe that shortly, I am going to blow up.”
Presh said he is not envious of his former partner’s success.
“I am not competing with Kcee. He is doing his thing, I am doing my thing. I cannot say I will surpass the height he has reached. KC Presh is not fighting. Kcee released his songs and Presh did same too. I knew he was going to blow. I expected his success.”
Those who claim to know said Presh actually was broke after the separation but he denied the reports saying, “I don’t know where the story came from but I was not broke. I was just re-strategising. I knew I would need all the financial back-up. It wasn’t a bad thing that his brother backed him up. Who wouldn’t back his brother? I would do same. We had an understanding. People have blown this separation out of proportion and it is very funny. I have heard so many stories,” he said.
“I still talk to Kcee. I wished him happy birthday a few days ago. There is no misunderstanding. The chance of working with him is open but for now, I want to concentrate on my career first so that I can get to where I want to get to. Then later, we can do something. I am not envious of his career. I thank God that I am blessed as well. I am signed unto a big record label; I don’t have any reason to fail.”
